I first read Graham Greene when I was 15. Meet Me at the Watts Towers

2024-02-21T21:56:17+00:00

It's amazing to think that Rodia's Watts Towers survived the 1933 and subsequent earthquakes, plans for demolition, a 10,000-pound load test, and the infamous riots that damaged 288 other buildings in Watts. With only the most rudimentary tools, it remains the largest structure built by one man alone.

Reading Dostoyevsky

Arrested and almost executed for reading Hegel and being a member of the Petrashevsky Circle, a literary group that opposed the Tsar, Dostoyevsky would spend four years in a labor camp. The execution was stayed, and after his release, he wrote ๐˜พ๐™ง๐™ž๐™ข๐™š ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™‹๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™จ๐™๐™ข๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ, and his last and most existential, ๐™๐™๐™š ๐˜ฝ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ง๐™จ ๐™†๐™–๐™ง๐™–๐™ข๐™–๐™ฏ๐™ค๐™ซ.
